Why it’s Important to Have Your Cosmetic Surgery Performed in an Accredited Facility

Most patients spend a significant amount of time choosing a facial cosmetic surgeon: they review their credentials, browse their before and after photos, and schedule consultations to help them select the right surgeon. But many patients don’t immediately consider where their surgery will take place. The location and, more importantly, whether or not the surgical facility is accredited, can dramatically impact the safety and success of your procedure.

Below, we explain what accreditation is and how to verify your surgery will be performed in an accredited facility.

What does it mean when a surgical facility is accredited?

Accreditation demonstrates adherence to rigorous standards set by national accrediting organizations for safety, cleanliness, equipment, and personnel. It means that, even if you are having your surgery in a private facility, it will meet or exceed hospital standards. And, because it is voluntary, a private surgical facility that has earned accreditation shows a commitment to quality care, patient safety, and professional excellence.

Why should you care about facility accreditation?

There are several characteristics of an accredited operating room that will help ensure your safety and well-being, including:

Strict protocols

Accredited facilities follow strict protocols before, during, and after each procedure for optimal outcomes and to ensure nothing about your process is overlooked. These facilities must also have emergency protocols in place, plus the necessary life support and backup equipment to respond swiftly and effectively to complications or life-threatening issues.

Sanitation and safety measures

Accredited facilities must have up-to-date, reliable medical equipment and adhere to stringent maintenance and sterilization processes. These facilities must also follow all federal laws and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations for blood-borne pathogens and hazardous waste disposal as well as be up to code with details such as proper lighting, reliable electricity, and backup power.

Qualified surgeons and staff

The medical team at accredited facilities, including the surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and technicians must prove they are licensed and qualified to perform their duties. They also must receive regular training to stay abreast of the latest advancements in their fields.

Privacy protection

Accredited facilities comply with privacy laws, such as the HIPAA Privacy Rule to protect your personal healthcare information. This rule mandates that healthcare providers and other entities must have systems in place to guard your private medical records, and it restricts how and when they can share this data.

Accountability

When a facility is accredited, it is accountable to a trusted external body. If something goes wrong or you are concerned about the care you receive and the practice is not responsive, you can address the issue with the accrediting organization. Accredited facilities are also subject to regular inspections and audits, and any discrepancies must be promptly corrected to retain accreditation.

How can you verify if your surgical facility is accredited?

You can initially check for facility accreditation by reviewing your surgeon’s website or asking in your consultation; they will explain if they have on-site surgical facilities or use a hospital or other facility outside of their office. Once you know the facility’s stated accreditation—which may be from the AAAHC, the Joint Commission, or Quad A—you may wish to double check the facility is in good standing by confirming it directly with the accrediting body.

What organizations accredit surgical facilities?

Several organizations are responsible for accrediting surgical facilities in the U.S., including:

Safety begins with a board-certified facial cosmetic surgeon

For your safety and the best possible outcomes, choose a facial cosmetic surgeon certified by the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery. ABFCS surgeons must meet the highest standards in patient care and only operate in accredited facilities. Use our directory to find a surgeon near you.
